Claudio Neves Valente has been identified as the suspect in a tragic shooting at Brown University that also resulted in the death of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, a respected nuclear science and engineering expert from Portugal. According to an autopsy conducted by the New Hampshire Department of Justice’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Valente is believed to have died on December 16.
New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella stated, “The examination confirmed that Mr. Neves Valente died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head, and his death has been ruled a suicide.”
Originally hailing from Portugal, Valente was a former student at Brown University. He entered the United States on a student visa to pursue graduate studies, attending physics classes at the Barus & Holley building. He took a leave of absence in April 2001 and officially withdrew from the university in July 2003.
After his studies, Valente relocated to the U.S. full-time, gaining residency through a green card lottery. His most recent address was in Miami, Florida, as reported by CBS News.

Neves Valente died just one day after he shot and killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, and three days after he killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown.
Law enforcement identified him as the shooter and found his body in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, on Thursday night, Dec. 18, according to The Providence Journal.
