Randy “Baja” Fletcher was a longtime tour production manager for country star Keith Urban. He became the production manager for Keith Urban in 2011 after decades working for top country music stars. “Baja,” as he was affectionately known, worked for some of the music industry’s top stars, including Brooks & Dunn, Waylon Jennings, Randy Travis, ZZ Top, and Keith Urban.

Born in Mavisdale, Virginia, Fletcher devoted his life to the Music Business, starting his almost 50-year career in Virginia Beachat the age of 17 with Bill Deal and the Rhondels. In May of 1969, Fletcher’s career was briefly interrupted when he answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army, including a tour of Vietnam. After his tour of duty, he returned to work with the Rhondels.

Randy then landed a job with rock legends ZZ Top for most of the mid 70s. In 1978 he started a 10-year run as stage and production manager for Waylon Jennings. During this time, he also toured with Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, and many more. In 1988 he began working with Randy Travis on his first headlining tour, whom he would continue with for five years. In 1992 Randy started working with Brooks & Dunn, where he served as the duo’s production manager for 18 years. In 2011 Randy took the role as production manager for Keith Urban.

“I got to go places that I would never have dreamed this little hillbilly beach boy would end up,” recalled Fletcher in an interview for CMA Close Up Magazine. “I just count my blessings and say, ‘Why me?’ This life I’ve lived, I wish everybody could’ve been there with me when it happened. It was the coolest.”

In 2010 Randy was awarded the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2017 awarded with the CMA’s first-ever Touring Lifetime Achievement Award. He was awarded Production Manager of The Year in 2019 among other industry honors.

Keith Urban said in a statement to Billboard magazine: “Randy Baja Fletcher loved people. Now that’s a phrase that’s a lot easier, and more often said than done. But, this man truly did love people, and music, and life, and he lived it right. He saw the commonality in all of us and I can promise you this, once you’d been in the orbit of his light, he’d stay with you forever. Some people ask are you a ‘glass half full or a glass half empty’ kinda person? Baja’s view was ‘What a beautiful glass.’ I loved him. We all loved him, and I’m grateful he chose us as his road family for 10 years.”

Brooks & Dunn’s Kix Brooks said in a statement to Billboard: “You run the road long enough, and you find out in our business, ‘It takes all kinds.’ Randy Fletcher, or Baja, or ‘the ‘Gorilla,’ was the best of the best — if he ever had a bad day he never showed it. If there was ever a problem out there he couldn’t solve, I never heard about it, and if he ever had a cross word to say about anybody, there’s a good chance, they were no friend of mine. We ran the road for almost 20 years together, and when Ronnie and I took a break in 2010, Urban made the quick call. Baja was a guaranteed asset to any tour, but much more importantly, he was the comfort any tour must have when the road gets long, when the crew gets tired, when the smiles began to fade at the end of a long day — he was the man! Rest in peace, my friend — you will be missed.”

Brooks & Dunn’s Ronnie Dunn said: “Baja was a classic bigger than life force. Kix and I never looked at him as someone who worked for us, he just walked in at a very early chapter of the Brooks and Dunn story and took the bull by the horns. He hand selected every member of our crew over the years. We were told time after time after time by concert promoters and arena managers that we had the best bunch in the business. There are stars onstage and there are stars backstage … Baja was never down, he lead by example not ego and all of the rest of us were happy to fall in line and follow his lead.”

ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons told Billboard: “Baja, as we all know, drove the Cadillac as few others could do. One of our first and foremost way back when who went on to show how it’s done.”

Country Music Association tweeted: “It’s with great sadness to learn of touring veteran & first ever recipient of the CMA Touring Lifetime Achievement Award, Randy “Baja” Fletcher’s passing. We join so many within our community in mourning his loss.”
