Luke Batchelor Biography – Luke Batchelor Wiki

Luke Batchelor is a stone carver, sculptor, designer and conservator based in the North East of England. He was featured on the first series of the BBC One daytime show Make it at Market.

Being dyslexic and unable to read until the age of 12, Luke was passionate about art from a young age. While growing up in North Northumberland, he became fascinated by the historic monuments, buildings and carvings that are found across the county.

Luke grew up in Northumberland and went to school in Alnwick. After leaving school, he trained as a Historic Building Conservator and worked on conservation projects across the North East and Scotland including the restoration of Rosslyn Chapel.

In 2015 with the support of Historic Environment Scotland and a large Bursary Award from Heritage Crafts Association, a charity working to keep endangered traditional crafts from dying out, Luke went on to train with stone carvers with in the UK and abroad. Luke spent a year in Italy carving marble alongside artists, and developed an interest in sculptural and memorial work.

In 2018, Luke decided to move home to the North East and set up his own workshop near Belford and forming his business, The Northumbrian Stone Carver.

Luke said: “Being gay and dyslexic, school wasn’t a fun time for me, but art lessons were something I always enjoyed and did well in.

“I chose my degree in historic building conservation, mainly because it taught some aspects of stone carving.

“Afterwards I got to work on some amazing projects and met many passionate, skilled craftspeople, but moving back to Northumberland and opening my own stone carving workshop was always my dream.”

Stone carver Luke Batchelor was a maker on the first series of the BBC show Make It at Market, presented by Dominic Chinea from The Repair Shop. Dom works with a team of business and craft experts to help a group of budding entrepreneurs make a living from their crafting hobby.

He told Northumberland Gazette: “I enjoyed the experience and it was good to get some advice on how to promote my work better.

“I’m a self-taught carver, so to also receive some useful pointers from an expert was great, and after the initial filming in the spring, it was nice later in the year to update Dom and the others on how I did since then.

“I’ve been blown away by the response to the episode. My number of social media followers have doubled overnight and I’ve had emails from across the country that have kept me busy since it aired.”
