Shakir Stevenson is the younger brother of Shakur Stevenson, born on July 9, 2000. He is also a southpaw boxer who fights in the lightweight division.

He started boxing at seven, inspired by his older brother and uncle Wali Moses, who is also Shakur’s trainer. He trains at the Brick City Boxing Club in Newark, New Jersey, where he grew up.

Shakir Stevenson made his amateur debut in 2014, winning the National Junior Olympics in Charleston, West Virginia.

He won a number of national and international championships, including the 2016 Youth World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia, in which he defeated Cuba’s Dariesky Palmero in the final.

He also competed for the United States at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he won a bronze medal.

Shakir Stevenson turned professional in 2019, signing with Top Rank, the same promotional company that handles his brother’s career.

He made his pro debut on October 26, 2019, on the undercard of Shakur’s world title fight against Joet Gonzalez at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada.

He defeated Ivan Varela by unanimous decision in a four-round about. Since then, Shakir Stevenson has won six more fights, all by knockout or technical knockout.

His most recent victory was against Juan Alberto Flores on November 16, 2023, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He stopped Flores in the second round with a vicious body shot. He improved his record to 7-0 with 6 knockouts.

Shakir is currently ranked as the 15th lightweight contender by the WBC and the 14th by the WBO.

He is expected to fight for a regional or minor title soon and eventually challenge for a world title like his brother.

Shakur Stevenson Parents: Religion and Ethnicity

Shakur was born Ash-Shakur Nafi-Shahid Stevenson in Newark, New Jersey on June 28, 1997. His parents are Malikah Stevenson and Shahid Guyton. The boxer has four brothers and two sisters. 

Stevenson’s parents are both African American and Muslim. They named him after Tupac Shakur, the legendary rapper who was also a Muslim. Shakur means “thankful” or “grateful” in Arabic.

Shakur grew up in a rough neighborhood in Newark, where he witnessed violence and crime at an early age.

He was raised by his mother and grandfather James Stevenson, who introduced him to boxing when he was five.

His father was incarcerated for most of his childhood and was released when Shakur was 15. The boxer credits his parents for instilling him with discipline and faith.

He follows Islam and prays five times a day. He also respects other religions and cultures and has visited several countries worldwide as a boxer. Shakur is proud of his roots and his heritage.

He often wears African-themed outfits and accessories to show his support for black empowerment and social justice. He also has several tattoos on his body that reflect his identity and beliefs.
