Shirley Gibson was the first mayor of the city of Miami Gardens who played an instrumental role in incorporating the city 20 years ago. 

In addition to that, Gibson was a former officer for the Miami-Dade Police Department before she entered politics. Miami Gardens was established in 2003 after activist locals banned together, saying they were getting short shrift from the county.

Grateful to have crossed her path in this lifetime. You NEVER know if that hug and goodbye will be the LAST HUG AND GOODBYE.”

Shirley Gibson was the Miami Gardens’ first mayor. In 1996, she was elected to the public offices of Community Council Three and the Miami Dade’s Democratic Party Executive Committee.

Likewise, Gibson was elected for two terms to Community Council Three. She also served as chairperson of the North Dade Municipal Advisory Committee and the Committee to Incorporate the City of Miami Gardens. 

Furthermore, she was also a Miami-Dade Police Officer who served for seventeen years. She also co-hosted a radio program named Miami Talk.

Talking about her educational background, Shirley went to St. Thomas University and graduated with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry.
