Shiv Jalota is an English actor, known for portraying the role of Vinny Panesar on the BBC soap opera EastEnders since 2019.
He pursued drama studies at Richmond Drama School and later joined the National Youth Theatre in 2013, based on a friend’s recommendation. His involvement with the theatre company, particularly in the stage production Homegrown: A True Story, played a pivotal role in his entry into the entertainment industry.
Jalota’s theatrical journey extended to various stage productions like Pigeon English, Romeo and Juliet, DNA, The Grapes of Wrath, Mother Courage and Her Children, Catalyst, and Pappy Show.
In 2016, he marked his short film debut, appearing as a gym-goer in Heavy Weight. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he secured the lead role of Christopher Boone in the play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, making history as the first British-Asian actor to assume the role. Jalota expressed relief at breaking away from standard BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) personas, finding the experience more rewarding and unrelated to his ethnicity.
Transitioning into television, Jalota was cast in the BBC soap opera EastEnders in 2019, portraying Vinny Panesar, the youngest brother in the Panesar family.
His on-screen debut occurred on October 29, 2019, alongside the characters of his brothers Kheerat (Jaz Deol) and Jags (Amar Adatia). Storylines involving his character on the show explored his relationship with Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) and the introduction of his parents, Suki (Balvinder Sopal) and Nish (Navin Chowdhry).
