Sophie Sugrue is a chef and a contestant on MasterChef UK 2025. She describes her style of cooking as “rogue plant-based food.” She added: “Beautiful, fresh, seasonal ingredients are usually the stars of my dishes. Plants are incredibly diverse, and I love showcasing what they can do.”
Sophie decided to go vegetarian when she was about 14-years-old and went fully plant-based by 16. Speaking about how she got into cooking, Sophie told the BBC: “I’d learned some basics from cooking with my parents, but my dad was a big meat eater and definitely not clued up on plant-based food, so I had to take matters into my own hands. His response was something like, “Well, if you want to be vegetarian, you can sort yourself out!” So, I did.
“From then on, I started experimenting with different recipes and exploring vegan cooking. I just fell in love with it. It’s the place where I feel most relaxed, unless everything’s going wrong in the kitchen! It’s almost meditative for me.”
Born and raised in Essex, Sophie lives in London with her best Mara and border terrier Stanley. Her boyfriend, Charlie, lives in Manchester. She is an assistant colourist in post production.

Chef Sophie Sugrue, 25, is a contestant on series 21 of MasterChef UK. She entered MasterChef this year to make her late father proud. She said: “My late father was a huge inspiration for taking the plunge. He always believed in me, and it’s something I really wanted to do to make him proud.”
She added: “I grew up watching MasterChef. It was the one show I was allowed to stay up and watch with my parents after bedtime. I have such fond memories of watching it with my dad — he was a huge inspiration for me entering the competition.”
Essex native Sophie will be competing in the semi-finals of MasterChef alongside Claire Syrenne, Harry Maguire, Hazel Coates, Henry Phillips, Munopa Nhete, Olivia Balzano, and Sam Kaeokon.
