Stephen Miran is an American economist and the current chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. On August 7, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Miran to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He will replace Adriana Kugler, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, on the seven-member panel headed by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that I have chosen Dr. Stephen Miran, current Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, to serve in the just vacated seat on the Federal Reserve Board until January 31, 2026,” President Trump said in a statement.

He has been with me from the beginning of my Second Term, and his expertise in the World of Economics is unparalleled — He will do an outstanding job. Congratulations Stephen!”
Miran served at the U.S. Department of the Treasury during the first Trump administration, advising on economic policy under then-Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, before joining Hudson Bay Capital Management LP, a hedge fund, as a senior strategist.
Miran donated to Trump’s re-election campaign, federal campaign records show. Since returning to the administration, Miran has overseen work at the White House to produce research about the economic effects of the president’s policies.
Before joining the administration, Miran floated the idea of weakening the value of the U.S. dollar in a bid to make American imports more competitive, a proposal known as the Mar-a-Lago Accord. He also highlighted the costs of the dollar’s being the world’s reserve currency.
Miran was formerly a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute in New York City. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, where he was under the supervision of Marty Feldstein, an eminent American economist who was CEA Chair during the Reagan administration. He received a B.A. from Boston University, where he studied economics, philosophy, and mathematics.
