On June 17, 2025, Deadline reported that Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries has been officially cast in the lead role of Clayface in an upcoming DC Studios project. The news was soon confirmed by James Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, who posted the story on X (formerly Twitter) along with a statement:

“After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries. Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by this guy, and can’t wait for you to see this film, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan.”

Gunn’s announcement sparked mixed reactions across the DC fanbase. While many were thrilled by the casting and the creative team involved, others expressed concern over DC’s decision to center a film around a Batman villain instead of focusing on the broader Justice League lineup.

One excited fan wrote:

“James Gunn and Matt Reeves impressed by him? Must’ve been outrageously impressive! So damn hyped.”

Another, however, was more skeptical:

“Gunn, I’m a fan of your movies, especially GOTG, but is it wise to suddenly do Batman villain-centric films when you could be focusing on building up the main heroes of the Justice League? I’m not at all enthusiastic about a Clayface film.”

Has Tom Rhys Harries Spoken About His Clayface Role?

As of now, Tom Rhys Harries has not released an official statement regarding his role as Clayface. However, he did acknowledge the casting news by sharing the Deadline article via an Instagram Story.

While some fans hope that he’ll open up about the character in the near future, others understand that secrecy is often part of large franchise productions like those under the DC or Marvel banners. Given the high level of confidentiality typically involved, it’s possible Harries will remain silent until the project is further along in development or closer to release.
