Sajid Akram, a Pakistani-Australian who owned a fruit shop, was among the alleged shooters in the tragic assault at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. He died at the scene, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was captured during the incident. Naveed was transported to the hospital, where he remains under police supervision in a critical yet stable condition.

The two attackers, who targeted the Jewish community in Sydney, had informed their family that they were embarking on a fishing trip to the South Coast. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald as police encircled her home in the western Sydney suburb of Bonnyrigg, Naveed’s mother, Verena, mentioned that her son had headed to Jervis Bay for the weekend with his father.

According to NSW Police, the attackers killed at least 12 individuals and injured 29 others, including two police officers, during the onslaught at Bondi Beach, where a large crowd was gathered for a Jewish festival. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as a deliberate assault on Jewish Australians and an act of malevolent antisemitism.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon vowed, “No stone will be left unturned. We will track down all associates of these gunmen and take decisive action to ensure the safety of the community.” He added, “Such disgraceful acts of violence and the senseless taking of innocent lives are intolerable in NSW.”
