The Australian TV celebrity and businesswoman Sarah Moore co-hosted Money For Nothing, where they salvaged goods from the landfill and repurposed them for sale.

EJ, an Australian woman, moved to Tokyo and Madrid after being born there before settling in Brighton. In a conversation with Brighton Transformed, he discussed the prejudice he had experienced in his native country.

He explained, “I grew up in a small, remote country town in Australia that was so intensely homophobic that it was still illegal to be gay there when I was a teenager. 

I distanced myself from homophobia, transphobia, and expectations from my family and my current circle of friends. I completely reset my life in a distant city where I didn’t know anyone and couldn’t speak the language.

Before realizing that mass-produced designer goods would just add more “stuff” to an already overloaded family, EJ studied product and furniture design.

Following a job sabbatical to raise a family, EJ developed the “maker’s itch”—a need to create something heartfelt and significant—which led to spoon carving. 

According to his biography on Google Books, carving spoons felt so nice that EJ did it frequently, ran workshops, and had spoons stocked at Anthropologie in the UK.

He mentioned that he doesn’t usually remember stuff like this because there is so much going on in the world (there always is). It’s because he frequently forgets that he is transgender. 

Since he is too busy living his life to think about it anymore, he doesn’t shout about it or wave a flag, but he will always be grateful to those who do since they continue to fight for and ensure that we have rights.

He also mentioned that he leads a beautiful life and has a wonderful family and friends. He is an ordinary, ‘regular’ (whatever that means) person who goes about doing ordinary things. 

Still, since coming out, he has ensured that he is constantly ‘visible’ so that future generations won’t feel the need to hide away for a long time while dealing with a lot of hardship.
