The pilot of the personal luxury plane had fallen oblivious. Because the airplane entered limited airspace unannounced, two DoD-approved F-16s mixed from the Pentagon to catch the plane, causing a sonic blast across the D.C. region.
The Virginia State Police started an inquiry and salvage mission following getting reports of the accident. They tracked down no survivors.
The plane had left from Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was headed for Islip, New York. The plane crashed in the scantily populated town of Montebello, Virginia, around 3 p.m. The plane was enlisted to Reprise Engines of Melbourne, which is a Florida-based organization possessed by John and Barbara Rumpel. Not even one of them was on the plane.
Rumpel told The New York Times his little girl, 2-year-old granddaughter, her caretaker, and the pilot were on the plane at the hour of the accident.
“We don’t know anything about the accident,” he told Washington Post. “We are conversing with the FAA now.”
