Richard was the fourth of five children born on August 6, 1947, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Frank Alberta, a restauranteur and immigrant from Sicily, and Betty Tillack.

During his time as a football player at Mahwah High School, he fell in love with Donna Pastor, a vivacious cheerleader whose last name hinted at their unlikely friendship.

Richard enlisted in the US Marine Corps but was honorably discharged after developing tuberculosis-related complications.

He then enrolled at Rutgers University to study political science, finance, and pre-law.

After graduating, he married his high school sweetheart, who was also a student at Rutgers, and they both bravely entered the workforce.

Richard was pursuing a career in finance and planned to attend law school, while Donna was employed by ABC Radio in New York.

But Alberta was at its lowest point, just as his professional career was taking off. Feeling depressed and anxious, he consented to go to church with his niece Lynn.

Alberta grew up in a dysfunctional, nonreligious household and was an outspoken atheist.

Alberta is preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as by his oldest grandson, Henry Alberta.

His survivors include his siblings Betty Lynn, Frank, Ted, and Jack; his wife of 49 years, Donna Alberta; his four sons, Christopher, Jonathan (Kristi), Brian (Stephanie), and Tim (Sweta); and his grandchildren, Alexis, Norah, Madison, Gabriel, Tyler, Isaac, Abraham, Lewis, Miles, Brooks, and Shea.

Tim Alberta worked as a reporter in Washington for over ten years, covering stories for the Wall Street Journal, National Journal, The Hotline, and National Review, among other magazines.

He was POLITICO’s chief political correspondent at the same time.

He has been a part of The Atlantic since 2021, and he continues to travel, write, and tell tales that speak to the core of the unhappiness in America.

In the interim, his creations have appeared in Vanity Fair and Sports Illustrated, among other magazines.

Other than that, the Washington Post and New York Times best-seller lists had his book, American Carnage, at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
