Simon Thomas Wife Derrina Gave Birth Eight Weeks Earlier After Falling Ill
After becoming “rapidly unwell” with preeclampsia, Derrina Thomas, the husband of Simon Thomas, stated that she had given birth eight weeks early.
The 49-year-old broadcaster announced on Instagram on Wednesday that they had given birth to a girl the day before after a “fear-filled” labor.
It occurs three days after Gemma, Simon’s first wife, was given the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia and five years after she passed away from blood cancer in 2017.

New addition: Simon Thomas has announced that his wife Derrina has given birth eight weeks early after suffering from preeclampsia

The presenter, 49, announced on Instagram on Wednesday that they had delivered a baby daughter after experiencing a “fear filled” labor the previous day. Difficulties
Derrina, 31, smiled in a series of photos that Simon shared of his newborn daughter and Derrina, who was recovering in a hospital bed from a challenging birth.
Derrina is a daughter of a church pastor who is currently employed in the legal sector.
In one picture, his 12-year-old son Ethan, whom he has with his ex-wife Gemma, was shown meeting his younger sister for the first time while she was still in the womb.
Following Derrina’s “rapid illness” from preeclampsia, Simon stated in a lengthy caption that his daughter was delivered eight weeks early and weighed only three pounds.
He said he felt ‘proud and blessed’ to welcome his baby daughter after the ‘fear-filled and stressful’ labour on Tuesday.

Simon explained that their recovery would be a “long road” and that they would be spending the upcoming weeks in the hospital (pictured: Derrina and Ethan, 12)
Simon acknowledged that the family still had a “hard road ahead” and would spend the coming weeks in the hospital.
He wrote, “Not everything in life works exactly as planned. Then, when Derrina became seriously ill, we find ourselves abruptly bringing into the world a very small but really adorable baby girl weighing just over three pounds. One moment we believe we have eight weeks till the birth of our child.
The neonatal team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital was simply amazing and held our hands physically and mentally the entire way through a very anxious and fearful day yesterday.
“I have a lovely, brave wife in Derrina, a priceless son, and now a little, gorgeous girl and sister for our boy Ethan. I cannot express how pleased and blessed I feel right now.
Given Derrina’s ‘rapid illness’ from preeclampsia, Simon disclosed in a lengthy caption that his daughter was born eight weeks early and weighed only three pounds.

One picture showed his son Ethan, whom he and his first wife Gemma have together, meeting his younger sister for the first time while she was in an incubator.
“We have a difficult road ahead of us, spending the next three weeks in the hospital, but we have the best staff behind us.”
“Thank you Stoke Mandeville and NHS for being there for us, and thank you God for abundantly blessing our family,” the speaker says.
The former Sky Sports analyst declined to say whether he and Derrina have already decided on a name for their baby daughter.
Only last month did Simon and Derrina reveal they were expecting their first child together.
He released a photo of Derrina’s ultrasound scan along with the joyful news that he will be growing his family.

Tragically, only three days after receiving a diagnosis of adult acute myeloid leukemia, Simon lost his first wife Gemma to blood cancer in 2017. They are both shown holding Ethan.
Simon wrote: “@chrissayburn & @brittanysipling sang this wonderful song of blessing over us fourteen months ago today. Another small blessing is on the way.
He also uploaded a video that included moments from their wedding day before their hands gradually unveiled the scan.
Along with a picture of the pair laughing with his son Ethan, 12, whom he shared with Gemma, he also shared a touching montage of images from his time with Derrina.
Dan Walker, Vernon Kay, and Jenni Falconer, his fellow TV hosts, congratulated him on his news.

Cute: Simon and Derrina only recently revealed they were expecting their first child together in an Instagram post. With his first wife Gemma, Simon has a son named Ethan.
Gemma Thomas, Simon’s late wife, tragically passed away in November 2017—a year after her doctor had advised bed rest after she had visited three times with flu-like symptoms.
Simon fell in love with Derrina two years after Gemma passed away, and the two were married in a ceremony at Norwich Cathedral in July 2021.
The former Blue Peter singer uploaded a photo of himself on his wedding day, beaming as he led his beautiful bride down the aisle in front of a cheering crowd of well-wishers.
Captioning the heartwarming image, the Norfolk-born father-of-one, who lost his first wife Gemma to leukaemia at the end of 2017, simply wrote: ‘Love. Wins.’
The happy couple’s big day was attended by a host of Simon’s TV presenter pals, including several former Blue Peter and CBBC presenters.

Love: Alongside his baby news, he shared a video with clips from their wedding day before their hands slowly revealed the scan

Exciting revelation: The ultrasound scan was displayed after the couple’s hands and the hands of Simon’s son Ethan were removed.
Simon frequently speaks openly about the tragic loss of his late wife, and he recently claimed that his current wife Derrina experiences feelings of “guilt” around the time of Gemma’s death anniversaries.
He stated during an appearance on Kate Ferdinand’s Blended podcast that he merely sees the dates of his first wife’s departure as a “point in time.”
However, Derrina believes that for the benefit of Ethan, who Simon and Gemma share, the family need to do more to commemorate her life.

I believe you sometimes battle a little with guilt, especially around anniversaries, Simon added. In that I don’t overthink anniversaries, I’m really at ease with them.

Unborn child: Simon uploaded a nice video with a closer-up view of the ultrasound scan.
“I believe that the first year after a loss, those firsts are significant and every first is a challenge to overcome, but with time it gets easier,” the author says.
I don’t want to do something particularly noteworthy on any anniversary. They are merely chronometers in my eyes. However, from Ethan’s perspective, it’s more of a “Would you like to do something?”
While Derrina is frequently eager to commemorate the anniversary, Simon explained that Ethan frequently prefers a low-key day, perhaps sending a “balloon with a tiny message” rather than a major event.
