At first, the authorities thought Susan had killed herself. The coroner said she had been poisoned by ethylene glycol and overdosed on oxycodone. But Susan’s parents, Danny and Avis Winters, were not happy. They thought Gregory had something to do with her death, so they hired a private investigator and a lawyer to find out what happened. In the end, the police reopened the case and arrested Gregory because they wanted to do the right thing. The coroner later changed Susan’s cause of death to “unknown.”

On January 3, he went to see his drug dealer around 3 a.m. and got back home about half an hour later.
Then there was the idea of making money. After Susan had gone to bed, Gregory tried to get into her bank account. Days after she died, he cashed a $180,000 check from the account she and her parents had together. He also got an insurance policy worth $1 million and more than $500,000 from Susan’s will. Gregory said that he and Susan both used drugs during their marriage, but he said that Susan had killed herself.
