A well-known human rights advocate from Belarus named Ales Bialiatski is currently imprisoned without being tried.

The 60-year-old Mr. Bialiatski founded the nation’s Viasna (Spring) Human Rights Center, which was established in 1996 as retaliation for Belarus’ ruthless suppression of street rallies under autocratic leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Viasna supported the imprisoned protesters and their families while recording the Belarusian government’s use of torture against political prisoners.

When announcing this year’s three Nobel Peace Prize winners, Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, stated of one of the recipients, “He has committed his life to fostering democracy and peaceful development in his home country.”

Numerous international human rights awards recipient Mr. Bialiatski served three years in prison after being found guilty in 2011 of tax evasion allegations he has consistently denied. In 2014, he was released.

Following significant street demonstrations against what opposition groups claim were manipulated elections that maintained Mr. Lukashenko in power the year before, he was imprisoned once more in 2021.

Ales Bialiatski has been the target of repeated attempts by the government to silence him, according to Ms. Reiss-Andersen.

She continued, “Mr. Bialiatski has endured enormous personal suffering, but he has not wavered in his pursuit of democracy and human rights in Belarus.

She continued, “Mr. Bialiatski has endured enormous personal suffering, but he has not wavered in his pursuit of democracy and human rights in Belarus.

On his Facebook page, Mr. Bialiatski wrote just before his detention two years ago that the Belarusian government “is operating like a dictatorship of occupation.”

It is unknown how Mr. Bialiatski is currently feeling.

Natallia Pinchuk, the activist’s wife, claimed to be “overwhelmed with emotion.”

She told the AFP news agency, “I express my heartfelt thanks to the Nobel committee and the entire community for recognizing the work of Ales, his colleagues, and his organization.

Since 1994, Mr. Lukashenko has ruled Belarus with an iron fist and is known in the West as Europe’s last tyrant.

Since Moscow’s invasion started on February 24th, he has been complicit in permitting his close ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, to bring ground soldiers and military equipment to Belarus and utilize Belarusian soil to launch lethal missile attacks on Ukraine.
