An 11-year-old boy from Pennsylvania faces homicide charges after allegedly fatally shooting his father, reportedly following the confiscation of his Nintendo Switch.
The incident, which coincided with the boy’s birthday, occurred around 3 a.m. on January 13. Law enforcement arrived at a residence in Duncannon to discover Douglas Dietz, aged 42, dead from a gunshot wound, as detailed in a release by the Perry County District Attorney’s Office shared with Oxygen.
Documents from the Pennsylvania State Police, referenced by Oxygen, reveal that the juvenile suspect has been charged with criminal homicide and is currently detained at the Perry County Prison. Bail was denied, and a preliminary hearing is set for February 19. The young suspect has not yet submitted a plea.
The Perry County District Attorney’s Office stated, “Due to the juvenile’s age, no identifying details will be disclosed,” emphasizing that there is no current threat to the community.
As reported by news station WGAL, court records indicate that Dietz’s wife discovered his body in bed on the morning of their adopted son’s birthday.
Dietz and his wife had sung “Happy Birthday” to their son around midnight, then went to bed, the outlet reported. Dietz’s wife told police she was awakened hours later by a loud noise and detected a smell she compared to fireworks. After unsuccessfully attempting to wake up her husband, the woman said she heard the sound of dripping liquid. When she turned on the light, she saw that it was blood.
According to WGAL, the boy then entered his parents’ bedroom shouting, “Daddy’s dead.” Responding officers stated they overheard the boy telling his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
The child was reportedly upset when his father sent him to bed. He later used a key to unlock a safe that contained a gun, believing that his Nintendo Switch — which his dad had confiscated earlier — was inside.
According to WGAL, the boy said he loaded the gun and walked over to his sleeping father. As the affidavit noted, “He pulled back the hammer and fired the gun at his father.”
An affidavit quoted by the outlet reportedly stated of the boy: ”He admitted that he had someone in mind whom he was going to shoot, whom he identified as his father.”
KOMO News reported that authorities observed a “large contusion” above the boy’s left eye and a small cut on his lower lip.
According to KOMO, Dietz’s wife claimed during an interview with authorities that her son had told her, ”I killed my dad. I hate myself.”
