A Texas man is behind bars after police said he allegedly attempted to kill his ex-girlfriend’s four teenage children.
Willie Simpson III, 32, was arrested on Friday after police accused him of three counts of aggravated assault of a family member. According to a criminal complaint reviewed by Law&Crime, Simpson showed up at the Timber Creek apartment complex in Houston on the evening of July 27 and saw the two teenage sons of his former girlfriend. The 16-year-old son told Simpson that their mother was not home, which prompted Simpson to call his ex on the phone.
According to the complaint, Simpson told his ex that he would shoot her children unless she came home.
The complaint stated that after Simpson ended the call with his ex-girlfriend, he told the 16-year-old and 19-year-old boys that if they did not go back inside their apartment, he would shoot them. But according to the 16-year-old boy who spoke to the police, Simpson allegedly opened fire on the two boys as they ran away. The 19-year-old was shot in the abdomen, but did not realize it until he was inside the apartment.
The brothers then ran through the apartment, out to the second-floor balcony, and jumped off to escape Simpson.
But the two boys were not the only children at home that day. Police also spoke to the woman’s 13-year-old daughter, who had returned to the apartment from the complex’s pool with her 12-year-old sister and some of their friends shortly before the alleged gunfire broke out. The 13-year-old told police that she and her sister saw Simpson near their apartment with a gun hanging from his pants pocket. The girls saw their two brothers exit the apartment as they went inside to change their clothes.
According to the complaint, the 12-year-old said that she heard gunshots. The 13-year-old went to see what was happening while the younger girl went into the bathroom. The older girl was soon confronted by Simpson, who allegedly pointed his gun at her. The 13-year-old ran into a closet and hid herself underneath a pile of clothes.
Simpson looked inside the closet, but he did not see the girl.
The 13-year-old said told police that while she was still hiding, she allegedly heard gunshots inside the house. By this time, the police had responded to the scene and found the 12-year-old in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.
Both the 19-year-old brother and 12-year-old sister were expected to survive their wounds after being taken to the hospital in critical condition. The boy had his spleen removed as a result of his injuries, per cops.
When the mother arrived at the scene, she told police that she and Simpson had been dating but were no longer together. On the day of the alleged shooting, he reportedly sent her “numerous” text messages asking to go back to the apartment where he used to live with her and the kids. When she told him he was not allowed to do so, he started calling her.
Simpson allegedly “demanded” that the woman return to the apartment “or else he would kill her kids.”
The woman told police that after he ended their phone call, she called one of her sons and could hear him running away.
Simpson was apprehended by police on Friday and charged with three counts of aggravated assault of a family member, unlawful possession of a firearm, and burglary with intent to commit murder. During a court appearance on Monday, his bond was set at $1,465,000. He is in custody at the Harris County Jail and is due in court again on Thursday.
