A 16-year-old boy found dead on Monday was shot and stabbed by his mother, Missouri authorities said.

Police performing a welfare check at a St. Charles home smelled a foul odor before discovering Krista Roy’s son, Carter Bennett, deceased with stab and gunshot wounds. Officers also located Roy, who had taken pills and also had injuries to her arms, which appeared self-inflicted, according to KSDK.

Roy allegedly admitted to shooting her son multiple times as he slept.

“She then laid down with him because he was still alive, was caressing him, and he was calling out her name, saying ‘mommy, mommy,” St. Charles County prosecutor Joe McCulloch said.

According to KSDK, Roy claimed she then stabbed her son with a kitchen knife to ensure he was dead.

KPLR reported that Roy also claimed she took her ex-husband’s Bersa .380 pistol from his home on September 26 with the intention of killing her son and herself.

Roy was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She remains jailed without bond.
