A 69-year-old Florida man allegedly murdered his wife’s lover after an argument in a flea market parking lot led to a fatal shooting.
Omar Rene Aguila stands accused of second-degree murder in the shooting that occurred on July 12 at the Northside Shopping Center in Miami.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald, Aguila’s wife and the victim started having an affair in 2019. Aguila learned of the romance in April 2024 and urged her to end the affair. But two days before the shooting, the victim reportedly showed up to Aguila’s and his wife’s home. The victim and suspect had a confrontation.
On the day of the shooting, Aguila was with his wife and son at the flea market when the victim dropped off food to a friend, the affidavit reportedly said. The victim tried to talk with Aguila’s wife before leaving. According to the complaint, Aguila went to the victim’s car where the two started arguing.
Within seconds, Aguila reportedly pulled out a gun and shot the man several times. Surveillance video allegedly captured the shooting, detectives reportedly noted.
Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The victim’s name has not been publicly released.
Cops reportedly let Aguila go following the shooting because he claimed self-defense and said the victim had a gun in his car. But detectives allegedly determined the victim was never armed. Aguila also is a convicted felon and is prohibited from having a gun, cops say. In addition to murder, he is also facing a felon in possession of a firearm charge.
Aguila was arrested on Thursday. He remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. His next court date is scheduled for Monday.
