A Georgia woman is behind bars after police say her 7-year-old son died earlier this year, while she was passed out inside her car.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, Kandice Keiamber Grace is facing charges that include second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children.

Police said that Grace passed out in her car on April 6, while in front of a home in the 300 block of Scott Street Southwest in Atlanta. Upon arrival at the scene, police found her son, identified as Mazi Simmons, with his head stuck in a backseat window.

An arrest warrant obtained by Channel 2 Action News stated that first responders rushed the child to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner, the victim’s cause of death has been listed as an accidental strangulation.

Police found two other children inside the vehicle. Both were unharmed.

A witness reportedly told investigators that the defendant arrived at his home the night before the incident. She left her three children in the vehicle while at the residence.

Grace reportedly visited briefly before leaving. The following morning, the witness walked outside and saw Mazi’s head stuck in the window, and contacted police.

On August 8, a toxicology reported indicated that Grace had opioids and marijuana in her system at the time of the incident. She also admitted to investigators that she passed out numerous times while in the vehicle, and was unable to supervise the children.

Grace remains behind bars without bail.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe fundraiser indicated that Mazzi “brought sunshine into every room with his energy, his sweet spirit, and that unforgettable smile.”
