A 40-year-old man in Tennessee will spend the rest of his life in prison after he sadistically kidnapped a 22-year-old woman and forced her to fatally overdose on a panoply of drugs as part of a sadistic revenge plan because the victim reported that he’d raped her just days earlier.

Latawyne Osborne on Friday formally pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of aggravated sexual battery in the horrific 2024 slaying of Danishka Melina Sibaja Mejia.

Pleading guilty ensured that Osborne would not face a trial and the possibility of the death penalty. Knox County Criminal Judge Hector Sanchez subsequently ordered Osborne to serve a sentence of life without the possibility of parole in a state correctional facility.

According to a report from McClatchy News, Mejia, on April 3, 2024, reported to the Knoxville Police Department that Osborne had sexually assaulted her. She told police that a few days earlier, she was at Osborne’s home where she fell asleep after drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. She awoke partially undressed with her tampon removed and went to the hospital where DNA evidence reportedly confirmed Osborne had raped her.

The night after she reported the rape, Osborne and two others reportedly broke into Mejia’s home where they forced her and two others — a woman who was nine months pregnant and her boyfriend, both 23 — into the basement. Osborne initially tried to force Mejia to execute the boyfriend and when she refused, he forced her — at gunpoint — to snort a bag of drugs until she passed out.

Prosecutors said that even after Mejia had passed out, Osborne forced a cocktail of more of the drugs into the unconscious woman’s mouth — including fentanyl, cocaine, meth, and heroin — simultaneously using his cellphone to film the inhumane ordeal, Knoxville NBC affiliate WBIR reported.

Osborne’s alleged co-conspirators, 21-year-old Marquis Ellis and 32-year-old Edward Wilson, are awaiting prosecution on first-degree murder and other charges.

“This was truly a heinous crime,” Knoxville Police Chief Paul Noel said in a statement following the arrests.

Prosecutors said that after Osborne forced Mejia to snort the drugs, the three men were making jokes about how long it was taking for her to die before Osborne reportedly placed a bag over her head and struck her in the face several times.

After ensuring that Mejia was dead, the trio shot the couple that was with Mejia, but both survived and were able to recount the barbaric crime to investigators, per McClatchy.

During the home invasion, one of Osborne’s alleged co-conspirators reportedly shot him in the leg. He went to a local hospital for treatment and when questioned, told authorities that Mejia had overdosed and he was trying to render aid when an unknown assailant broke into her home and shot him.

Following the murder, Ellis and Wilson reportedly stole Mejia’s car, which they later set on fire near Knoxville College.

According to WBIR, following Osborne’s arrest, investigators seized his cellphone and found images and videos of Mejia’s murder and of Osborne groping and raping her several days earlier.
