An Oregon man who killed his coworker at Dave’s Killer Bread over the belief that he may have sexually assaulted his girlfriend has learned his fate — and so has the girlfriend.
In a press release from Clackamas County, the county’s district attorney announced that Cody James Denewith, 27, was sentenced to just over 27 years in prison for the slaying of his coworker, Nathan Dean Anderson, 25, whom he shot and killed in 2024. The company where they worked is known as a “second chance” employer, actively supporting the hiring of people with criminal backgrounds who seek to turn their lives around after being incarcerated.
Denewith’s motive, the DA said, was rage fueled by his belief that Anderson had possibly sexually assaulted his girlfriend, Dominique Marie Britt, 27.
When Britt made the claim against Anderson, Denewith signaled his intention to kill him — and Britt facilitated the fatal act.
The DA stated that days before the shooting on April 29, 2024, Denewith was arrested for domestic assault and spent a short time in jail. According to a representative from the DA’s office who spoke to Law&Crime, Britt reportedly attended a gathering during that time period that also included Anderson, and she became intoxicated.
After Denewith returned home, Britt claimed that Anderson may have “sexually assaulted” her at the gathering, which triggered Denewith’s fury. According to the DA, Denewith was “consumed by the belief that it had happened” and became “fixated” on “getting revenge.”
Britt’s claim was never substantiated.
Driven by his anger, Denewith attempted to solicit several family members to help him off Anderson. He made his violent intentions clear to Britt three days before committing the act. On the day of the shooting, he asked Britt to pack his clothes along with his “toy,” which was a code word the couple used for Denewith’s Sig Sauer P365 handgun.
Britt knowingly complied with his request, the DA said, fully knowing that he intended to kill Anderson.
On the day of the shooting, Denewith fired three shots into Anderson. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Britt pleaded guilty in December 2024 to manslaughter in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon. She was sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison.
Denewith pleaded guilty on April 14 to manslaughter in the first degree and assault in the first degree with a firearm. He was sentenced to a total of 27 1/2 years in prison.
