An Idaho woman accused of shooting her boyfriend in the leg following a dispute over cookies has claimed the incident was unintentional, according to authorities.

Katheryn Welch, 53, was released on bond after being arrested on December 23. She faces charges including aggravated battery, destruction or concealment of evidence, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. As reported by CBS affiliate KMVT, Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a shooting incident at the residence Welch shares with her boyfriend. Upon arrival, officers initially received no response at the door but succeeded in entering the premises.

Inside, officers discovered a man with bloodstained pants featuring a hole near the right knee, displaying difficulty as he favored his left leg.

The Times-News, another local outlet, reviewed the affidavit, revealing that the 911 call was placed by the boyfriend’s relative. The caller informed dispatchers that the shooting had allegedly taken place several days prior.

When deputies inquired if anyone else was present in the home, the man mentioned that Welch was inside. He hesitated to specify where he had been shot until a deputy asked, “Right there in the knee where your leg is bleeding?” to which he confirmed.

When police questioned Welch, who complied with deputies’ order to come out of the home with her hands up, she claimed that the shooting was an “accident” that “occurred after an argument over Christmas cookies had ensued.” She allegedly admitted to police that she discarded the gun she used along the road.

After obtaining a search warrant, deputies searched the home and found blood spatter underneath a desk along with a .22-caliber bullet casing. They also found a substance that was later confirmed to be methamphetamine. The gun was not found.

Welch was arrested and booked into the Twin Falls County Jail. She posted $75,000 bond on Monday and was released. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2026.
