A teacher from an elementary school in Alabama found herself under arrest this week, facing charges of intentional child abuse after a video surfaced showing her allegedly striking a boy with a belt over 20 times.

According to Cottage Hill Christian Academy, the boy involved is the son of Nicole Staples, and the incident reportedly occurred at her own home, as detailed by WALA.

The video captures a woman, identified as Staples, shouting profanities while punishing the child for not completing his chores. In the footage, she can also be seen forcefully pulling the boy down by his hair and then dragging him back up.

WALA characterized the circulating video as “extremely disturbing” and “difficult to watch.”

The child’s age was not disclosed in the report.

The school said it placed Staples, 44, on administrative leave when it learned about the allegations and fired her when she was arrested.

“Cottage Hill Christian Academy prioritizes the wellbeing of children above all else,” said Head of School Chris Brazell. “We will always act promptly, transparently, and responsibly when matters arise that may impact the safety or integrity of our school community.”

The school said it was cooperating with state and local officials as they continue their investigation.

According to AL.com, Staples was a 2nd grade teacher at the shcool and was named co-Teacher of the Year in May.

Staples is to appear in court for a bond hearing on Friday, WALA said.
