Staff report

ALACHUA, Fla. – Jeremy Dwayne DeCoursey, Jr., 18, was arrested early this morning and charged with attempted premeditated homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (juvenile) after allegedly shooting at a neighbor on September 9.

DeCoursey and the victim’s son reportedly got into a physical fight at about 8 p.m. on September 9, and the victim’s son left the area after the fight, leaving DeCoursey at his home; DeCoursey then walked from his home to the victim’s home, where the victim was standing outside. DeCoursey allegedly pointed a gun at the victim and fired multiple rounds.

The victim told Alachua Police Department officers that he ran to take cover, and DeCoursey advanced toward him, still firing. The victim said he ran away to avoid being shot.

A witness told officers that he saw the entire incident, from the physical fight with the victim’s son to the shooting. The witness reportedly said DeCoursey handed his gun to an unknown male after he stopped shooting, went back to his home to change clothes, and then left the area on foot.

Officers reportedly found fresh shell casings in the victim’s yard. Investigators determined that DeCoursey went to get a firearm after the initial fight was over and that he made a conscious decision to approach the victim and shoot at him after a “reasonable amount of time to exercise judgment or ‘cool off.’”

DeCoursey was previously convicted as a juvenile of grand theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a delinquent (juvenile previously convicted of a felony). Judge Susanne Ballard set bail at $1,000,000 on the arrest warrant.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
