A father and his 4-year-old son were found dead in an eastern Ohio lake over the weekend after their mother crashed a golf cart — carrying three other children — into the water.

It’s not clear from Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office releases how exactly the two incidents are connected. According to the sheriff’s office, the woman crashed the cart into Atwood Lake “next to Atwood Marina West” at about 10:30 Saturday morning.

“After helping the woman out of the water, the woman made concerning statements about conversing with God,” the sheriff’s office said. “Her 15-year-old daughter and twin 18-year-old sons got out of the water on their own and were physically safe. It was evident that the crash into the water was intentional by the mother. This family is Amish and reside in Homes County and were reportedly just visiting the lake for the weekend.”

Further conversations with the woman and the teens, however, “made responding units concerned for the safety of a four-year-old male son and the woman’s husband who could not be located.”

Investigators determined that “foul play was suspected” and later on Saturday located the 4-year-old boy “off the end of a boat dock at Atwood Lake.” The mother was hospitalized with “mental health concerns.”

Search crews continued looking for the 45-year-old husband. Witnesses said he was last seen with the mother at about 1:15 that morning at the boat dock where the young boy was found in the water. They were forced to abandon the search for him after dark and returned to the scene Sunday morning.

Armed with new information, they sent sonar boats and divers near the dock “in an area referred to as the ’causeway.’”

At about 8:30 a.m., they located the body of a man about 50 yards off the edge of the dock. Detectives said they would be executing search warrants “to look for more clues to piece this unusual tragedy together.”

The sheriff’s office said the identities of the victims would be released by the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office after identifies are confirmed and family notifications are complete.

According to WOIO, the teenagers have been released to family members. A news conference is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
