The mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC News host Savannah Guthrie, has taken a new twist as two media outlets have reportedly received a “ransom note” regarding her whereabouts. The unsettling document was sent to both KOLD, a CBS affiliate in Tucson, and TMZ, a well-known tabloid entertainment platform. TMZ was the first to break the story, opting to publish details about the note before alerting the Pima County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, the note is being closely examined by investigators. It allegedly included precise details about Guthrie’s residence and her attire on the evening she vanished. The ransom demand, which called for millions in Bitcoin, has added a chilling dimension to an already perplexing case. TMZ claims to have verified the legitimacy of the Bitcoin address mentioned in the note. However, as of now, authorities have not confirmed the overall authenticity of the document.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos commented on the investigation process, emphasizing the importance of following every lead thoroughly. “It’s like any piece of evidence,” he explained to CBS News. “You give it to us, you give us a lead, we’re going to look at every aspect of that lead.”
As the investigation continues, both the family and the public await any developments that could shed light on Nancy Guthrie’s sudden disappearance and the credibility of the alleged ransom demand.
“It’s like any piece of evidence,” Nanos told CBS News. “You give it to us, you give us a lead, we’re going to look at every aspect of that lead.”
Guthrie was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, as CrimeOnline previously reported. She was reported missing by family around noon on Sunday.
Nanos said late Sunday that investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” but it was on Monday that he said investigators believe the 84-year-old was abducted.
CrimeOnline’s Nancy Grace said that blood was found on the scene and that she had seen the images.
“It’s from the door going out on the driveway,” she told Fox’s Sean Hannity. “It looks to be, to me, free falling low velocity … not from a weapon hitting her or a gunshot wound … droplets like from a bloody nose. I’m trying not to read anything worse into that than it already is.”
A source told CBS the blood was a small amount of dried blood next to an outside doormat.
Grace further said that investigators are looking a surveillance cameras inside the home — which were apparently set to record over every eight hours — to see if they can recover older video.
