In a disturbing incident outside a Whole Foods in Olathe, Kansas, an elderly woman was reportedly assaulted by a man wielding a hammer. The suspect, 50-year-old Christopher Brewer, has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery following the attack on the 85-year-old victim.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was struck in the head and subsequently rushed to the hospital, where she underwent surgery to address multiple facial fractures. According to a report from local Fox affiliate WDAF, the violent encounter unfolded in the store’s parking lot when a bystander heard screams and witnessed Brewer allegedly attacking the woman with a hammer.

Law enforcement officials responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, where they found Brewer still present. A shopper who intervened reported that Brewer made several incoherent statements, such as “I’m a person too” and “You don’t know what you’re doing,” according to court documents.

Brewer was taken into custody while emergency responders tended to the injured woman, who suffered cuts to her head and nose. The Olathe Reporter noted that during a subsequent search of Brewer’s vehicle, authorities allegedly discovered a bag of marijuana and a metal pipe containing the substance.

During police questioning, Brewer reportedly acknowledged his involvement, telling detectives, “My name is Chris, and I hit someone today, but I don’t know more. That’s what I would like to say, and at some point in time could find out what happened to him because I need to talk about that.”

WDAF reported that the woman was placed in intensive care after surgery, but did not have a more recent update on her condition. A reporter from the station spoke to the victim’s neighbor, Sherill Benson, who said the woman regularly shopped at that Whole Foods store. Benson told WDAF, “The day she had been here, she said she had been at the store and was going to go home and have a salad from there.”

Brewer was charged with aggravated battery and booked into the Johnson County Jail. His bond was set at $35,000 after his first court appearance on Monday. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 11 for a preliminary hearing.
