A man from Tennessee is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s townhouse armed with an “AR-style” rifle, hiding in her closet, and confronting her while she was asleep with her current boyfriend and her 5-year-old child. Her other two children were in a nearby bedroom at the time of the incident.

Corwyn Winfield, 26, hailing from Memphis, was arrested on Monday in Shelby County following the alleged break-in on October 25. He faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault and domestic assault, according to court documents.

Details from Winfield’s arrest affidavit, obtained by Law&Crime, describe how he allegedly concealed himself in his ex-girlfriend’s closet at the Emerald Square Townhomes in Memphis’ Hickory Hill neighborhood. At the time, the home was occupied by three children and three adults.

While his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were sleeping in an upstairs room, they were startled awake by Winfield, who, according to the affidavit, emerged from the closet. Winfield, the father of the woman’s children, allegedly brandished a loaded black “AR-style rifle” and fired it several times during a confrontation with her boyfriend.

The affidavit details that Winfield aimed the weapon at the couple, threatening to kill them and instructing them not to move. When the new boyfriend attempted to escape, Winfield allegedly blocked the door, leading to a struggle over the firearm as the boyfriend tried to disarm him.

The ex-girlfriend “screamed” for the other adults in the home, who were downstairs, to come help, according to police. The new boyfriend managed to knock Winfield’s weapon out of his hands and onto the floor.

“Winfield grabbed the gun … and ran out of the home,” the affidavit says.

Police say Winfield was hit in his arm by a bullet during the mayhem and went to a local hospital to be treated, where officers found him. Another round struck a neighboring townhouse and bedroom occupied by a 10-month-old baby, a 6-year-old, and two 17-year-olds, according to cops.

“[The ex-girlfriend] positively identified Corwyn Winfield as the person responsible for entering her home without permission and hiding in her bedroom closet before pointing a black gun at her and her guest,” the affidavit alleges.

Winfield, who has a history of arrests for domestic violence, is charged with aggravated domestic violence, aggravated child abuse or neglect, reckless endangerment, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, in addition to aggravated assault and domestic assault.

Authorities held Winfield this week on a $400,000 bond, and he was due in court Wednesday. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 12.
