Kevin Marin (Doña Ana County Detention Center).

A disturbing incident unfolded in New Mexico as a young man is now facing serious charges after allegedly shooting his mother following a late-night confrontation. Authorities say the altercation began when she accused him of “acting crazy.”

Kevin Marin, a 20-year-old resident of Santa Teresa, has been charged with aggravated battery against a family member and attempted second-degree murder, according to records from Doña Ana County.

The violent episode took place in the early hours of Monday morning at their home situated near Santa Teresa Elementary, close to the Texas border and just northwest of El Paso, near the U.S.-Mexico frontier.

During the incident, Marin’s brother was also present. He reported hearing Marin’s loud and agitated shouts late into the night, prompting him to advise Marin to calm down and go to bed. This account was confirmed by El Paso’s local Fox affiliate, KFOX.

Marin”s brother was also at the residence, and he reported hearing Marin screaming late in the night. He told Marin to go to sleep, according to El Paso-based Fox affiliate KFOX.

Their mother reportedly urged Marin to do the same thing, saying “he was acting crazy,” according to law enforcement.

The woman then brought Marin to his bedroom, according to the brother, and stayed with him. But at some point, as the minutes ticked on, the house turned into a crime scene.

Around 3 a.m., gunshots were heard at the home. The defendant’s brother went to see what happened and saw a startling sight: his mother was bleeding and had been shot 11 times, KFOX reported, citing a court document.

Marin’s brother took his mother to a hospital, where she was labeled in critical condition. At the home, officers reportedly found multiple casings from a semi-automatic rifle/carbine.

Another woman who was at the home at the time of the shooting said she returned to the residence after the victim was brought to the hospital to find Marin sitting on the living room couch, according to local NBC affiliate KTSM. The defendant would be arrested and charged that same day.

Court records out of El Paso County, Texas, show Marin was indicted in January 2024 on aggravated assault charges.
