A woman from Tennessee, accused of attacking her ex-boyfriend who uses a wheelchair, has been taken into custody by the authorities.

Taneshia Gearing, 29, faced arrest by Chattanooga Police Department officers on Friday following the issuance of a warrant. She was charged with domestic assault and vandalism. After posting bond, she was released. According to an arrest affidavit reviewed by local ABC affiliate WTVC, these charges relate to a reported incident from June 2024. The complaint details that Gearing allegedly assaulted her ex-boyfriend and forcibly removed him from his wheelchair.

The affidavit reveals that on June 25, 2024, Chattanooga police responded to a distress call from the man, who remains unnamed. He reported that Gearing, his former partner, forcibly entered his residence by kicking down a locked door. Once inside, she allegedly began shouting at him and proceeded to wreak havoc in his apartment. In an attempt to flee the chaotic scene, the man reportedly got out of his wheelchair and made his way down a flight of stairs. Gearing is accused of pursuing him outside and continuing the assault.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by local ABC affiliate WTVC, the charges stem from an alleged incident in June 2024 involving Gearing and her former boyfriend, who told police that Gearing beat him and pulled him out of his wheelchair.

According to the affidavit, Chattanooga police responded to a call placed on June 25, 2024, by the unnamed man who said that Gearing, his ex-girlfriend, broke into his home by kicking through a locked door. After screaming at him, Gearing allegedly ransacked his apartment while he attempted to escape by getting out of his wheelchair and working his way down a flight of stairs. Gearing allegedly followed the man out and continued attacking him.

The man told police that Gearing threw a phone at his face, leaving a cut under his eye. She also tore his shirt off and beat him with her fists before she fled the scene.

When police arrived, the man refused medical assistance. Officers also offered him assistance from a domestic violence advocate, but he turned them down.

Inside the apartment, police found a baseball bat and two smashed TV sets. According to the affidavit, a witness was able to confirm the man”s account of the alleged attack.

Gearing was charged with domestic assault and vandalism/malicious mischief. Her next court date is scheduled for Nov. 12.
