GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A tragic incident has left one man dead and four deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office on paid administrative leave following a confrontation in which the deputies discharged their firearms at an armed individual.
Deputies were dispatched early this morning to a residence in the 6700 block of SW 4th Place in the Holly Heights area. The call came from a concerned resident reporting that a man, identified as 55-year-old Darian D. Holmes, was armed with a handgun and aggressively pounding on their front door.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found Holmes waving the firearm recklessly and making statements that suggested he was in a severe state of emotional distress. Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation through negotiations that lasted approximately 40 minutes, the standoff ended in gunfire.
Authorities also uncovered that Holmes had a criminal history, including 14 prior felony convictions, with two specifically for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to ASO, shots were fired “at some point during the encounter” and medical care was immediately provided to Holmes, who was transported to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.
