The tragic death of a 17-year-old boy in Georgia, who lost his life in a Gwinnett County motel, is believed to be the result of an accidental shooting during a gun-cleaning session.

As authorities delved into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sheldon Lewis, they turned their attention to the neighboring room occupied by 31-year-old Shermarcus Cockran. Reports from FOX 5 indicate that Cockran’s firearm discharged mistakenly while he was cleaning it, sending a bullet through the wall that ultimately claimed Lewis’s life.

The incident occurred at the Live In Lodge located in Lilburn, where Gwinnett County Police responded just before midnight on Thursday. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the teenager, marking the start of an investigation into the tragic event.

At the time of the incident, Lewis was reportedly in room 216, engaged in playing video games. It was during this time that Cockran’s mishandled weapon fired, with the bullet piercing through the wall and fatally striking Lewis.

Following an initial inquiry, police arrested Cockran, who now faces multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the full details of this heartbreaking incident.

While crime scene investigators spent the better part of Friday morning gathering evidence at the scene, many questions remain.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific type of firearm used or confirmed whether it was legally registered to Cockran.

It is also unclear how long the two have been residing at the motel.

Cockran is expected to remain in the Gwinnett County Jail until his preliminary hearing, which the sheriff’s office anticipates will take place sometime this weekend.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the victim’s family with expenses.
