Vermont authorities have discovered a body near the area where a college student went missing a week prior, sources reported on Thursday.
The body was found at The Knoll, a farm in Cornwall associated with Middlebury College, as reported by WCAX. This discovery occurred during the ongoing search for 21-year-old Lia Smith, who was last seen on the college campus the previous Friday.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the identity of the body and establish the cause of death. Initial findings, as noted by WCAX, do not indicate any suspicion of foul play.
Smith, originally from California, is a senior at Middlebury College. Her father reported her missing on Sunday after she stopped responding to phone calls and messages from friends.
Authorities have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding Smith’s disappearance.
According to reports, Border Patrol participated in a large search on Wednesday. The FBI, Vermont State Police, and New York State Police were also investigating Smith’s disappearance.
Police were expected to hold a live conference on Thursday but it was canceled around the time the body was discovered, according to WPTZ.
The Knoll is reportedly located west of Middlebury College.
