In the moments before a civil case was set to begin, the family of Ellen Greenberg and Philadelphia officials agreed to reopen the investigation into the young teacher’s death. The settlement means that after 14 years, the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will review and reinvestigate Greenberg’s manner of death.

Ellen Greenberg was found stabbed 20 times in the head, back, neck, and chest. Her death was ruled a suicide.

The Greenberg family’s attorney, Joseph Pedraza Jr., said the settlement includes an agreement that the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an “expeditious” review of Greenberg’s 2011 death. The settlement was reached days after Dr. Marlon Osbourne, the former assistant medical examiner who conducted the autopsy, signed a sworn statement saying he now believes Greenberg’s manner of death should be classified as something other than suicide.

Dr. Osbourne initially ruled her death a homicide before changing the ruling to suicide.

In a public statement, Osbourne said he decided to change his stance after reviewing additional information from the Philadelphia Police Department and consulting with Dr. Lucy Rorke-Adams, a pediatric neuropathologist. In his statement, Osbourne wrote that he is now unsure of the events that occurred that day. He also said he does not know “whether the door was forced open as reported; whether Ellen’s body was moved by someone else inside the apartment with her at or near the time of her death, and the findings of Lindsey Emery, M.D., from her neuropathological evaluation of Ellen’s cervical segment sample.”
