A man from New York has been apprehended by California authorities, accused of a series of grave offenses that include kidnapping, torture, and forcing a woman to accompany him across the country while committing crimes. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Rahson Govantes, is facing multiple charges including aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, and torture, according to information released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.

The disturbing series of events came to light on a Saturday afternoon when law enforcement responded to a report of suspicious individuals loitering outside a Sephora store at The Shoppes at Chino Hills in California. This prompted an investigation that led to the arrest of Govantes alongside the victim, who had allegedly been coerced into participating in criminal activities under duress.

Details of the case reveal a harrowing ordeal where the woman endured abuse and torture, reportedly at the hands of Govantes, as they traveled across the country. The Sheriff’s Office disclosed these findings in a press release, highlighting the severity of the charges and the ongoing investigation into the matter.

While the specifics of the crimes committed during the cross-country journey have not been fully disclosed, the case underscores a chilling narrative of control and violence that has now been interrupted by law enforcement. As the legal proceedings move forward, more information is expected to emerge, shedding light on this troubling case and its implications.

Cops began investigating around 2:43 p.m. on Saturday when they responded to The Shoppes at Chino Hills “for a report of suspicious subjects loitering in front of Sephora.” Govantes and the woman were taken into custody, the press release said.

“During the investigation, deputies located several fraudulent identification cards, social security cards, and debit cards,” the statement added.

The 51-year-old victim reportedly told deputies that she “was kidnapped and forced to travel across the country” with Govantes, described as “a 28-year-old resident of New York,” and an “unidentified Black female adult.”

The purpose of the alleged kidnapping, the victim told deputies, was “to commit fraud throughout the United States to repay debts she owed.”

“During their travels, Govantes and the female suspect tortured and abused the victim by burning her with cigarettes and a curling iron,” the press release said.

The female suspect has not been publicly identified. Cops, who released Govantes’ photo to the public, believe Govantes also may have victimized other women.

Govantes remains in custody at the San Bernardino County Jail without bond.
