An Illinois surgeon, Michael D. McKee, stands accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife, Monique Tepe, and her husband, Spencer Tepe. Allegations have surfaced that McKee had threatened Monique’s life multiple times nearly a decade ago during their short-lived marriage.
Authorities apprehended the 39-year-old McKee at a Chick-fil-A in Rockford, Illinois, on January 10, 2026. He faces charges of two counts of murder for the deaths of Spencer and Monique Tepe. The charges have since been elevated to premeditated aggravated murder.
Investigators have linked McKee to the crime through neighborhood surveillance footage, which captured his vehicle entering and leaving the couple’s Ohio neighborhood around the time of the murders.
A subsequent search of McKee’s upscale Chicago condominium yielded several firearms. Preliminary ballistic tests suggest one of these weapons matches evidence found at the scene of the Tepe murders.
Just twelve weeks prior to the alleged murders, McKee was embroiled in a malpractice lawsuit filed by a Nevada man. The plaintiff contends that McKee vanished, making it impossible for legal documents to be served to him.
Nevada lawyer Dan Laird files the suit, but serving McKee was nearly impossible, as the surgery group he works for gives the attorney a fake address, and the phone number issued by the state medical board for McKee is a fax machine.
