Christina Grimmie’s Legacy: A Decade Later—Family Opens Up on Tragic Loss and Healing Journey

The voice of Christina Grimmie continues to resonate with many.

Ten years after the tragic murder of The Voice star by a fan, Kevin Loibl, her family is dedicated to honoring her memory.

“It’s hard to fathom that a decade has passed since Christina left us,” expressed her brother, Marcus Grimmie, and father, Albert “Bud” Grimmie, in a heartfelt statement on June 10. “Yet, we find ourselves enveloped in endless love, her presence still vividly felt.”

In the family’s new documentary Christina Grimmie: Her Voice and Legacy A Decade Later, Marcus and Bud reflected on Christina’s enduring presence in their lives. (Tina Grimmie, her mother, died from breast cancer in 2018.)

They continued, “We are deeply grateful each day for how this community has kept her spirit alive.”

Fans still visit Christina’s YouTube channel where the then-teenager found fame with viral song covers. The channel now also features the retrospective on her career and how the family turned their grief into action with The Christina Grimmie Foundation.

One way her legacy endures is through the support extended to survivors of the Pulse nightclub tragedy, which was once the most lethal mass shooting in modern American history.

“It became too much many times,” Pulse victim Patience Murray, who was shot twice in the attack, said in the documentary. “It was The Christina Grimmie Foundation, during those times when it was too much, that helped lift me and my family up when we really needed it.”

In the early hours of June 12, a gunman killed 49 people at the Orlando nightclub. Just days earlier, Christina was fatally shot while signing autographs for fans after a concert in the same city.

The singer’s brother, who tackled and fought Loibl before the killer took his own life, pledged to honor Christina’s memory through the foundation.

“It feels like her legacy and her volume of work kind of speaks for itself,” Marcus shared in the documentary. “But what we can do is keep helping people as long as there’s a need. And as long as there’s a need, we’ll be doing what we’re doing to whatever capacity.”

According to its website, The Christina Grimmie Foundation was created “to honor the victims and to support their families by offering tangible services to help them while they face the aftermath. The Foundation fosters a community of support, receives donations, organizes fundraising events, and works directly with the families to provide services and a support system.”

Christina’s family also asked fans to, “Tell us the song that stopped you in your tracks, the moment you first found her, the way her voice stayed with you.”
