Man who shot college student over suspected affair sentenced

An Oklahoma man will spend his life in prison after being convicted of fatally shooting another man he suspected was involved with his wife, despite her insistence to the contrary. The incident unfolded on a college campus.

On Tuesday, 32-year-old Brandon Morrissette received a life sentence for the murder of Robenie “RJ” Long, as reported by CBS affiliate KWTV in Oklahoma City. Morrissette was found guilty of first-degree murder in August for the 2023 shooting of 20-year-old Long. The tragic event took place at Rose State College in Midwest City when Morrissette confronted Long, who was leaving a building with Morrissette’s wife, a fellow student.

Family members of the victim, who attended the sentencing, noted that Morrissette seemed indifferent during the court proceedings, according to KWTV.

“I can’t speak for him, but from what I observed, he was just smiling and grinning,” remarked Mykell Long, the victim’s sister. “He definitely couldn’t look my mom in the eye while she was addressing the court.”

RJ Long’s mother shared with the station that her son, a Marine since his high school graduation in 2021, had a girlfriend with whom he planned to spend his life.

“All Morrissette’s ex-wife was to RJ was a student who sat beside him in one class, that’s it,” Kelly Long said. She also said that her son shielded his fellow student from Morrissette’s bullets as they left a class.

Morrissette apparently believed that Long was having an affair with his wife, KWTV reported. Investigators said Morrissette’s wife told police that Long was a classmate and friend.

The August verdict came after jurors heard “evidence that Morrissette shot Long seven times outside the Humanities building on campus,” Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna said in a statement at the time of Morrissette’s conviction.

Jurors delivered their verdict just hours after starting deliberations, KWTV reported. Jurors recommended that Morrissette serve a life sentence for the murder, local Fox affiliate KOKH also reported.

According to court records, Morrissette is expected to enter a plea and be sentenced for possession of child sexual abuse material on Wednesday.
