On Monday, the Wise County School Board in Virginia convened for the first time since Union High School football coach Travis Turner went missing amidst charges of child pornography.
As reported by News 5, the atmosphere at the meeting was “tense,” with parents pressing for more information following allegations that Turner engaged in inappropriate conduct with students.
School Board Chair Larry Greear explained that public commentary was not permitted during the meeting, as the session focused on employment matters.
Addressing the situation involving Turner, Greear emphasized that the school is equipped with resources to support students during this time.
“Our primary concern is the well-being of the students; we aim to maintain a sense of normalcy for them,” Greear remarked. “We have counseling services and additional resources available at the school to support them.”
Parents, however, are frustrated with the lack of answers.
One parent told News 5 that they were “aggravated and concerned” about what appears to be a “lack of communication from the school board.”
Greear said public comment will be available during the next meeting on January 12.
Meanwhile, the search for Tuner continues.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Turner, the former head football coach in Big Stone Gap, left into a wooded area near the residence in Appalachia, on November 20.
The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a “reward of up to $5,000 for information” that leads to Turner, who is facing five counts of child pornography possession.
Turner has since been removed from the staff member website at the high school.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact Virginia State Police Division 4 at 276-484-9483 or send an email questions@vsp.virginia.gov. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
