Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Clovis Dieudonnie McNair, 36, was arrested this morning after Gainesville Police Department officers identified him as the driver who hit a scooter last night in the 300 block of SW 34th Street. The male driver of the scooter succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

At about 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, GPD officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run with a male victim on the ground and a BMW that fled the scene, dragging a scooter. Witnesses provided descriptions of the BMW, the driver, and a possible tag number.

According to a release from GPD, officers responded within four minutes and found the victim in the roadway. He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The initial investigation found that a silver BMW traveling at a high rate of speed had rear-ended the scooter; the scooter was lodged under the BMW and dragged to the 3400 block of W. University Avenue, where it was later found.

Officers quickly determined the address of the suspect and reportedly found the BMW there. Officers arrived at the residence at 10:47 p.m. and attempted to contact anyone inside via loudspeaker announcements. At the same time, detectives requested and obtained a search warrant and an arrest warrant with a $500,000 bond for McNair.

Several of GPD’s Special Response Groups responded, including the Negotiations Response Team (NRT) and SWAT team; NRT tried several times to call McNair.

At about 5:30 a.m., McNair spoke to SWAT team members through a window and agreed to surrender. A few minutes later, a woman came out of the home, followed by McNair, and McNair was arrested.

McNair has nine felony convictions (none violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (none violent); almost all are for drug charges. He served a state prison sentence for selling cocaine and was released in 2014.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
