The death of a Colorado woman whose body was found in January was ruled a homicide by the county’s coroner, and one of her own family members may be held responsible.
Corrye Brewer, 97, was reported missing on Jan. 25 by her family during a visit, which triggered a senior alert from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation at the time. In their description of Brewer, the CBI included the fact that the grandmother “suffer[ed] from a cognitive impairment which may affect her memory,” making her even more vulnerable in the frigidly cold weather.
Two days later, human remains were found near an intersection in Calhan, Colorado. The body was later identified as Brewer.
Months later, on April 9, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office released its report on Brewer’s autopsy, classifying her manner of death as a homicide. In their report, obtained by local CBS affiliate KKTV, they said Brewer died from hypothermia as a result of being “intentionally left in the cold without any way to return home, get to adequate shelter, or call for help.”
According to KKTV’s reporting on the coroner’s findings, Brewer had allegedly been left at an unoccupied house in the area by her own daughter. The elderly woman was abandoned without her walker or her phone.
The report stated that the weather on the night of Jan. 24, when Brewer was allegedly brought to the house, was windy with snow showers and temperatures as low as 16 degrees Fahrenheit. Brewer was reportedly found dead on the same property days later, according to KXRM’s coverage of the coroner’s findings.
Some of Brewer’s surviving family members spoke to KCNC, a local CBS affiliate, which reported on tension within the family, including with the relatives the grandmother had been staying with at the time. Brewer’s granddaughter Shari Robinson told KCNC, “We just want it brought out to the light. She is gone, and we hope that someone would take the time to provide answers for the family.”
No one has been charged in Brewer’s death. KKTV reported that the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office was still investigating and that the case is set to be reviewed by the District Attorney.
