Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Caleb James Martin, 18, and Donell Kensha Moultrie, 18, were arrested yesterday after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop.

At about 6:27 a.m. on October 19, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies received information from Gilchrist County about a dark-colored sedan heading eastbound on State Road 26 (W. Newberry Road) toward the Alachua County line. Deputies saw the sedan in the 17500 block of W. Newberry Road and activated lights and sirens, but the driver allegedly continued to flee eastbound at speeds over 100 mph. The driver turned left on NW 143rd Street (CR 241) and drove northbound. Deputies deployed stop sticks in the 4600 block of CR 241; the sedan’s tires deflated, and the car crashed in the 5600 block of CR 241.

The driver and front passenger reportedly fled from the vehicle despite commands from deputies to get on the ground.

Moultrie reportedly returned to the vehicle a short time later and was identified as the driver; he was arrested for fleeing with lights and sirens active and for resisting an officer without violence. Deputies learned that he had previously been issued a learner’s permit that was suspended on August 26, 2024 due to failure to pay traffic fines, so he was also charged with knowingly driving with a suspended license.

Martin allegedly fled eastbound through a nearby field, and deputies engaged in a foot pursuit. At about 3:05 p.m., deputies located Martin, and he allegedly fled on foot again; deputies eventually took him into custody.

The arresting deputy reported that dash camera footage from a patrol vehicle showed that Martin had a gun in his right hand when he got out of the car and then threw it to the rear of the vehicle in an effort to conceal it from law enforcement. Martin is an adjudicated delinquent, meaning he was previously found guilty of an offense that would be a felony for an adult, and he is prohibited from possessing a firearm until he is 24.

Post Miranda, Martin reportedly admitted that he had fled and said he fled because he was “in fear due to a large amount of white people around him.”

Martin has no adult convictions but has at least one juvenile conviction from 2021; Judge Craig DeThomasis set bail at $7,500.

Moultrie has no adult convictions but at least one juvenile conviction. He is facing two sworn complaints filed on October 17 but has not yet been booked on those charges; one sworn complaint charged him with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, and possession of drug paraphernalia, and the other one charged him with possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent. Judge DeThomasis set bail at $8,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
