An Arizona jury has returned a verdict of guilty for Lori Vallow Daybell in her trial for conspiracy to kill her fourth husband in 2019 — the incident that began a series of deaths and attempted murders that saw her and her fifth husband ultimately convicted of killing two of her children and his first wife in Idaho.

The jury deliberated for less than 20 minutes on Monday and returned to complete their work on Tuesday, spending less than three more hours in the jury room, according to EastIdahoNews.com.

Unlike her Idaho trial, Vallow Daybell opted to represent herself in the two week trial in Arizona but presented no witnesses or evidence to support her case. Instead, she said in her opening statement and closing argument that Charles Vallow’s death was a “family tragedy” and not a crime.

Prosecutors argued that Vallow Daybell conspired with her brother, Alex Cox, to kill Charles Vallow in order to collect what she thought was a $1 million insurance policy. Vallow and Vallow Daybell were separated at the time, and she was already dating doomsday author Chad Daybell.

Vallow was shot to death in July 2019 by Cox when he went to pick up 7-year-old JJ Vallow from Vallow Daybell’s home. Cox and Vallow Daybell claimed the shooting was self-defense, and charges were never filed. Two months later, JJ and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan vanished, and police eventually initiated a search at the insistence of the young boy’s grandparents.

The children were found dead and buried on property owned by Chad Daybell in June 2020.

Meanwhile. in October 2019, two more incidents took place: Gunshots were fired at the ex-husband of Vallow Daybell’s niece in Arizona on October 2 — she stands trial next month for conspiracy to kill him — and two weeks later, Tammy Daybell was found dead in her Idaho home. The coroner initially said she died from natural causes, but that later changed after her body was exhumed and further tests were conducted that determined she had been asphyxiated.

Chad Daybell and Vallow Daybell fled in the midst of the search for the children to Hawaii, where they married on November 5. And then, in mid-December, Cox — who was connected with all of the crime scenes — died, supposedly from blood clots and high blood pressure.

Vallow Daybell was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to three life terms in prison. Her husband was convicted last year and sits on death row in Idaho.

Vallow Daybell stipulated to aggravating factors in the case — that it was a dangerous act, that the victim’s family incurred financial or emotional harm, and that it involved an accomplice — avoiding further arguments in the case. That will be used in sentencing at a later date, after the attempted murder trial.
