One person is dead and seven more injured after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Las Vegas Trump International Hotel Wednesday morning.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the truck was rented in Colorado through the app Turo and driven to Las Vegas, arriving at about 7:30 a.m. It drove up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before pulling up to the main entrance of the hotel.

The sheriff said investigators don’t yet know if there is any connection between the explosion and the deadly attack on a crowded New Orleans street earlier in the morning except that both trucks were rented through Turo.

Observers saw smoke coming from the vehicle before the explosion, which took place about 8:40 a.m., 15 to 20 seconds after it arrived there.

The driver is dead, McMahill said.

“We do know who rented the truck,” he said, adding that investigators have not yet confirmed that the person who rented the truck is the person who drove to the hotel.

McMahill said investigators don’t yet know what caused the explosion but said gasoline canisters, camp fuel canisters, and large fireworks mortars were in the truck bed.

The seven injuries were all minor, he said.
