A daycare worker from Wisconsin faces charges for allegedly fracturing a 3-month-old girl’s arm by forcefully placing her into a crib.
Ashley Karschnick, 32, refuted claims of being frustrated or handling the child harshly, stating instead that any movement of the crib seen in surveillance footage was a result of her accidentally bumping it with her hip, according to WBAY.
The incident occurred on October 13, prompting the Fond Du Lac Police to respond to a call from Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. The infant was diagnosed with a “minimally displaced spiral fracture of the mid-left humeral diaphysis,” as noted in a criminal complaint. Medical professionals at the hospital indicated that the injuries aligned with signs of abuse.
Upon reviewing the surveillance footage from Lily Pad Day Care, investigators observed Karschnick’s increasing frustration throughout the day. Around 12:30 p.m., she allegedly lifted the infant by the torso and forcefully placed her into the crib, causing it to rock and producing an audible thud. The baby immediately began crying.
Shortly after, Karschnick reportedly returned to the crib, possibly attempting to “starfish swaddle” the child. Detectives noted in the complaint that the infant’s cries were so intense that she struggled for breath, describing the sound as a “blood-curdling scream.”
At this point, Karschnick took the baby out of crib and laid her on the floor, her left arm limp and not being used normally. She was still screaming.
When detectives spoke with her on October 16, Karschnick denied being frustrated or slamming the child into the crib and said the screaming was the same cry she was giving me,” and “I feel like every time I touched her she was crying.”
Police charged her with child abuse-recklessly causing harm. She appeared in court last week and was given a $2,500 bond. According to WLUK, she is barred from having contact with children under the age of 12 except her own. She is due in court again on Tuesday.
