A 75-year-old man from Michigan is in critical condition after allegedly being assaulted by a DoorDash driver. The incident reportedly occurred after the elderly man expressed concerns about the driver’s speed through his neighborhood.
Authorities in Wixom, a suburb of Detroit, responded to a distress call on the evening of December 28th. They found the elderly man unresponsive and lying on the street near Barberry Circle and Windingway Drive. Initial investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from a case of road rage.
Shortly after the incident, 40-year-old Ryan Turner went to the Wixom Police Department, admitting his involvement. According to Turner’s account, he punched the man during an altercation because he felt threatened. Turner, a DoorDash delivery driver, stated that the man fell and injured his head after the punch.
The confrontation reportedly began when the elderly man, identified as Lloyd Poole, confronted Turner about his driving speed in the residential area. Turner was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault. He has since been released on a $35,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on January 14th.
As reported by Detroit’s WXYZ, Poole remains in a coma following emergency brain surgery, during which doctors removed part of his skull to alleviate pressure.
“He sucker punched my dad, and my dad never got up, and he drove away,” Poole’s daughter Jen Shaw told local Fox affiliate WJBK.
Shaw said her father is still in a coma.
“Could be like this for a day, could be like this for a week, or a year,” she told WJBK.
She doesn’t understand why someone would become so violent.
“People are crazy,” said Shaw. “You cannot anticipate how people are going to react, obviously.”
Per WJBK, Turner was previously convicted in a separate road rage case in 2022. He lost his license.
DoorDash released the following statement to People:
“What occurred was absolutely appalling and unacceptable,” the statement said. “DoorDash has zero tolerance for violence, and we have permanently removed the individual’s access to the platform. We are working with local law enforcement to support their investigation to ensure justice is served.”
