A resident of New York has been convicted of assault following an incident where he shot at a DoorDash driver who mistakenly entered his neighborhood.

John Reilly, aged 49, faced numerous felony charges, and at the conclusion of his trial on March 26, he was found guilty on all but one count. Reilly, who served as the Highway Superintendent in Chester, New York, was acquitted of attempted murder. However, he was convicted on charges of first-degree assault with depraved indifference, second-degree assault, and nine counts related to weapon offenses. These charges arose from a shooting incident on May 2, 2025, involving Alpha Barry, a 24-year-old DoorDash driver who testified that he accidentally found himself in Reilly’s neighborhood while trying to make a delivery.

The mishap occurred when Barry was working a delivery shift on the night of May 2, 2025. With his phone battery dead, Barry wandered into a Chester neighborhood and approached Reilly’s residence with the delivery. Upon encountering Reilly, Barry inquired if he had placed the order.

Reilly instructed Barry to vacate his property, and Barry complied. However, as Barry was leaving, Reilly reappeared with a .45 caliber Glock pistol. He first fired a shot into his front lawn before directing multiple shots at Barry’s car. One of the bullets penetrated the vehicle, striking Barry in the lower back and inflicting “devastating injuries.”

Barry was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. During the procedure, doctors removed a bullet and had to excise two feet of his small intestine.

As Law&Crime previously reported, the shooting was caught on surveillance video from Reilly’s own home. His wife, Selina Nelson-Reilly, is also facing charges for hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence for allegedly deleting 17 videos taken by their smart doorbell camera. Her next court date is scheduled for April 10.

Reilly, who was out on bail before his trial, was remanded to jail until his sentencing on May 18. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
