Peacock is giving viewers a deeper look at the “deadly consequences” of the experimental surgeries performed by Dr. Paolo Macchiarini.

The streamer released the trailer for the new documentary Dr. Death: Cutthroat Conman on Tuesday, December 12. The feature-length documentary “reveals the shocking rise and fall of Paolo Macchiarini, the superstar celebrity surgeon who ascended to global fame after performing the world’s first synthetic organ transplant, only to be exposed as an international con man whose web of lies extends decades, ensnared many including those in his personal life and left a trail of devastated patients grappling with a nightmare,” per a series description.

Executive produced by Mary Robertson, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, and Adam Ciralsky, the documentary — streaming December 21 on Peacock — features interviews with experts and journalists with knowledge of the case.

Macchiarini’s experimental surgeries and relationship with journalist Benita Alexander is the inspiration for Season 2 of the anthology series Dr. Death. Actor Edgar Ramirez plays the Italian doctor, while Mandy Moore portrays Alexander, an NBC News producer who fell for Macchiarini’s charms.

In Season 1 of the Peacock Original, Joshua Jackson played Texas doctor Christopher Duntsch, a surgeon who left 34 patients injured or maimed. He was convicted by a jury on one charge of intentionally or knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a patient and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Season 2 Showrunner and Executive Producer Ashley Michael Hoban said in a press release that the show’s anthology format gives the team “the freedom to explore variations on a theme.”

Dr. Death is a show about systemic failures, and this season, these issues reach a global scale,” explained Hoban. “Amid complex narratives, we’ve been fortunate to delve deeply into a story that, while entirely unique, remains surprisingly familiar, as it taps into a truly universal part of the human condition: illness. Even putting aside any recent global pandemics, we all know what it’s like to feel sick. It renders us vulnerable, small, in desperate need of help. A doctor we can trust.”

To learn more about Macchiarini’s story, watch Dr. Death and Dr. Death: Cutthroat Conman on Peacock beginning December 21.
